TALLAHASSEE, FL. (WTXL) - The state will have to pay for a private attorney for one of the men accused in the murder of FSU Law Professor Dan Markel.
Luis Rivera requested a public defender when he was brought to Leon County to face charges in the murder, but last week, the public defenders office said they could not represent him because of a conflict of interest.
The reason is confidential. Rivera's case then went to the Criminal Conflict and Civil Counsel Office but they filed a motion Tuesday, saying they also have a conflict with the case, because the state is seeking the death penalty.
That means they will now have to appoint a private attorney for Rivera, which will be paid for by the Justice Administration Commission.
