TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida wants an appeals court to reconsider a far-reaching ruling that could lead to slot machines at several dog and horse tracks.
The 1st District Court of Appeal ruled late last month that a state agency should have approved slot machines because voters in Gadsden County approved a referendum authorizing them.
Attorney General Pam Bondi on Friday asked the full court to consider the case. The case had been decided by three judges on the court. The ruling was decided by a 2-1 margin.
The ruling could have a wide impact because voters in Lee, Brevard and Palm Beach counties as well as the north Florida counties of Hamilton and Washington have approved similar referendums. The judges in their ruling asked the state Supreme Court to make a final decision on the case.
Bondi's filing said the decision could have a "widespread expansion of gambling" the Legislature never intended.
