TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- Following the destruction caused by Hurricane Maria, the dean of the College of Law at Florida State University reached out to the dean at the University of Puerto Rico at offered to host students. Yesterday, there was a welcome luncheon held on campus and all the law students and faculty were in attendance to welcome the new students.
With all resources expected to be impaired for months, students made the difficult choice to come to America and continue their studies. The students arrived early in the semester, so they were able to keep current with their studies. This helped smooth a difficult transition after so much disruption in their personal lives. Students said it was challenging making the decision to leave their family, but they felt it was something they needed to do.
Also, the College of Law ensured each guest student was assigned an F.S.U. law student and local lawyer mentor to help them get settled and to offer whatever support they might need. Alumni in the area donated apartments or houses near campus, so the students don't have to worry about transportation. Julian Rendon, a San Juan Local and 2nd year law student noted, "It's super hard leaving your family behind and country behind in such a bad situation. When I was there I tried doing everything I could to help, but I made it here and I'm happy to be here. Everything has been great and everyone has been treating me so well."
Unfortunately, about 5 students were simply out the tuition money paid at the University of Puerto Rico. So, not only did F.S.U. alumni offer housing, but President Thrasher waived all tuition fees, which allowed these students to continue their studies. The 2nd and 3rd year law students will be here for the remainder of the semester.
