TALLAHASSEE (WTXL) - Stargazers, rejoice! The Perseid Meteor shower peaks overnight through Thursday morning with up to 80 meteors per hour crossing the night sky.
Look to the northeastern sky around 11 pm through dawn for optimal viewing. (This is near the constellation "Perseus," which is where the name originates.) Make sure to head out to a rural spot to avoid light pollution. Mother Nature is giving us an additional treat by lining up this annual meteor shower during a new moon phase, which hasn't happened since 2007.
Sky conditions look relatively clear especially the farther northwest you are early on. A cold front will pass by late in the day, so if you're in the Suwannee Valley, you may have to wait til later overnight to partake in the viewing, but conditions will turn favorable before sunrise.
To summarize:
- Meteor shower peak starts at 11 pm and continues til dawn.
- Look towards the northeast sky.
- Up to 80 meteors per hour can be seen.
- New moon will allow for even darker conditions, but be sure to be in a rural spot to give yourself the best chance of seeing plenty of meteors!
