TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A 19-year-old has been arrested after police say he broke into a home while a family of four was still inside.
According to an arrest document, police were called to a home in the 3600 block of Tyson Green Way on Wednesday around 7:15 p.m. about a home burglary in progress.
The homeowner, who was inside the home at the time, told police that the suspect had kicked in the back door and was inside the home.
When police arrived, they opened the front door and found two suspects inside. They gave the men commands to show their hands, but the men took off, one of them running away from the house while the other shut the door and ran back into the house.
Officers chased the man that ran away from the house, documents noting that the man was carrying a laptop, a pair of headphones, and a gun in his hand as he ran.
Eventually, an officer tased the man, identified as 19-year-old Karsherrick McMillan, and arrested him. Other responding officers were able to find and arrest the second suspect, who was an unidentified minor.
An investigation revealed the gun found on McMillan was connected to another home burglary on July 11 where multiple items were stolen.
Documents say police also found a set of keys to a Mercedes in McMillan's pocket that were reported stolen just one day earlier on Tuesday. In addition, investigators discovered a Samsung cellphone and a box of flash drives near where they arrested the unidentified minor.
When officers spoke to the victim, she said was in her bedroom when she heard someone ring the doorbell. The victim said she looked outside and didn't see anything, but soon heard loud banging at the back door as if someone was trying to kick the door in.
The victim ran upstairs and locked her children in their rooms as she heard the sound of glass breaking and people coming into her house. After locking herself inside another room, the victim called the police.
Based on the evidence, McMillan was charged with armed burglary, grand theft, grand theft of a firearm, grand theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a weapon by a delinquent, open carry of a weapon, criminal mischief, and resisting without violence.
He remains in jail on a $35,000 bond.
