TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (The News Service of Florida) - Legislation filed Thursday at the State Capitol would allow family members to petition courts to temporarily restrict-access to guns for people who are threats to themselves or others.
Under a law passed shortly after the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last February, what is known as a Risk Protection Order can only be filed by a law enforcement officer.
The new legislation would expand that authority to include family members.
During a news conference at the State Capitol, several Democratic lawmakers gathered in support of the measure filed by State Senator Lori Berman.
"Who better to determine that someone is at risk, than someone living close to them. Enough is enough," said Berman.
The legislation would also require someone who is legally allowed to own a firearm to lock it up inside their home if someone else living in the home is prohibited from owning or possessing a gun.
Moms Demand Action helped push for this legislation Wednesday.
