ADEL, Ga. (WTXL) -- The Adel Police Department responded to a shooting Wednesday night off of Guy Street. According to police, upon arrival, they found 22-year old Kadijah Adkinson shot in the chest. They say they performed CPR and first aid until paramedics arrived.
Adkinson was then taken to Cook Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead. She was also confirmed to be pregnant.
Police say they believe her younger, 14-year old half-brother pulled the trigger.
Close friends and neighbors say they are still in shock after the shooting, but they believe this was all just an accident.
"He was crying so much until we had told him to get up", said Tara McMillian, Adkinson's cousin. "When we told him to get up, his friend comforted him, and he was like 'He had accidentally shot his sister. He didn't mean to.' He was like 'He loved her.'"
Amy Debery, a neighbor and family friend, added "I hugged and hold the mother yesterday. [...] That's her baby. He's a child. They locking him away."
Authorities say they charged the boy with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Feticide, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, and Possession of a Firearm by a Person under 18.
Witnesses say they heard the gunshot but they also say they did not see the shooting. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning at the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta. For now, Adkinson's brother is being held at a regional youth detention center.
