TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Six candidates are in the race to be the next mayor of Tallahassee. The latest to enter the race: former state representative Michelle Rehwinkle-Vasalinda.

She served the 9th district from 2008 to 2016, which includes Tallahassee, and worked in education prior to that.

She has enjoyed a break from politics for the past year-and-a-half, but says she's ready to get back in and serve the people of Tallahassee.

She's running on three ideas of integrity, economic diversity, and resiliency.

"We need competition in this town so that state workers are not the only game in town and we are not just a government town," said Rehwinkle-Vasalinda. "That puts us in a very vulnerable spot and so I think we need to bring more corporations in and more businesses in and leverage the three universities."

The mayoral race is non-partisan, and will be on the August primary ballot. Vasilinda is the second female candidate.

She will run against Tallahassee mother and mental health advocate Carrie Litherland, Mayor Gillum's former Chief of Staff Dustin Daniels, County Commissioner John Dailey, and military veterans Erik David and Joe West.
