A Dothan man is in jail after police there said they found two small children locked in a waste container area, covered in ants.
Police arrested Lorenzo McCullogh, 25, Saturday night after receiving a tip that McCullogh was suicidal and threatening to harm the children, who are ages 2 and 4.
When police arrived to McCullogh's apartment on Alabama Avenue, neither he nor the children were there.
More than an hour later, around 12:15 a.m., police said they saw McCullogh walking and stopped him to talk. They said McCullogh ran away and was found hiding in another apartment's closet a short time later.
Police, firefighters and Houston County deputies joined in a search for the two children and found them around 2 a.m., locked inside a brick waste container at Johnson Homes. Both children were covered with ants.
The children were taken to a hospital for treatment.
McCullogh was charged with two counts of torture or abuse of a child under 18, attempting to elude police and unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle.
He is being held without bond.
