LAPLACE, LA (WVUE) - A four-year-old girl and her father were killed after a shooting Tuesday night in LaPlace, and the sheriff believes they were targeted.

The St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office received a call about shots fired in the 100 block of Joe Parquet Circle.

Cameron Mack was carrying his daughter Cali and some groceries up the stairs when a gunman came out of the darkness and fired multiple shots, killing both of them.

Sheriff Mike Tregre said the mother was inside when she heard the shots. Tregre said she came downstairs and found them.

She was about to put her other child in the car when deputies arrived and took the child from the scene.

Mack was taken to an area hospital where he provided information to deputies regarding the shooter before he died Wednesday morning.

According Tregre, the father was targeted. Tregre said the suspect was waiting behind a trash can.

"For someone to lay in wait and do this, it suggests that he was a specific," said Tregre. "But on the bigger picture, this person, this perpetrator, this suspect is a threat to all of us. For him to do this, he doesn't care about anybody or anything."

The family collected their belongings from the scene Wednesday morning.

Mack's mother is skeptical that the community will help get justice for her son and grand daughter.

"It's a waste of time. These people stick together. It's a waste of time," said Angela Walker, Mack's mother. "The sheriff will have to do it on their own. That's what they get paid to do s cause you have a lunatic like that on the loose for all this time? Who's going to jeopardize their lives for someone they don't even know. So they need to do their own job."

The shooting is still under investigation. Tregre urges the public to come forward with any information.
