MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) -- An Air Force reconnaissance mission observed hurricane-force winds, allowing Nate to be upgraded late Friday night to a category 1 hurricane as it enters the far southern Gulf of Mexico.
Highest winds are estimated at 75 mph, with gusts up to 85 mph. Nate is moving swiftly to the north-northwest at 22 mph.
A projected landfall along the Mississippi or Alabama Gulf coast is likely Saturday night as a stronger category 1 hurricane, with some additional intensification possible.
