TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- Science-focused lessons Wednesday morning continued despite a veil of clouds and the threat of rain.
The meteorological features blended in well with Killearn Lakes Elementary School's third-annual weather balloon launch. Most of the school's students and staff witnessed the launch from the playground area, assisted by a consortium of school district teachers and volunteers, including our own Chief Meteorologist Casanova Nurse. He also gave a presentation in the cafeteria covering the purposes of weather balloons and their application in everyday weather forecasting.
The effort was supported by a grant from the Foundation for Leon County Schools.
A platform was attached by string to the balloon, carrying tracking equipment and cameras. The balloon exceeded 60,000 feet in elevation during its flight. After the balloon burst, the platform and equipment were recovered later in the morning in a neighborhood in Coffee County, Ga.
