TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Crossing guards, helping our children get safely across the street in any weather and Friday they were honored.
Dozens were recognized for their dedication at the Tallahassee Police Department, including one who was named as Florida's School Crossing Guard of the Year.
Danny Burnett, a crossing guard at Hartsfield Elementary was chosen out of more than 300 other nominees in the state for the prestigious honor.
Burnett was surprised when his name was called for the award and he says it's humbling to have received it.
For him being a school crossing guard is all about the children's safety and well being.
"I like to make sure that the kids are safe, and arrive to school safe and leave to go home safe," said Burnett. "Like I said, I encourage them to do their homework as well."
Also recognized at Friday's celebration was Mr. Bob, who was nominated as a favorite school crossing guard.
Mr. Bob has been a crossing guard for 18 years, greets students with high fives, and helps them cross at Kate Sullivan Elementary.
