TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Pope Francis appointed Most Reverend Bishop Gregory L. Parkes of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee as the new bishop of St. Petersburg.

He is taking the spot of retiring Bishop Robert Lynch who has served as bishop of St. Petersburg since his start in 1996.

"I sat before the blessed sacred, I knelt before the blessed sacred, and I thanked the Lord for his goodness, his kindness, but also asked for his help," said Parkes.

At the press conference on Monday, Bishop Parkes was introduced to the community.

He was ordained as the 5th bishop of Pensacola-Tallahassee in June of 2012.

He got his bachelor's degree in finance at Florida State University, then went on to seminary school in Boynton Beach.
