TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- In recent years, June 2nd has been known as "Wear Orange Day" in honor of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year old Chicago teen who was shot and killed.
On June 2, 2015, what would have been Pendleton's 18th birthday, hundreds of organizations and individuals wore orange in honor of her and the 90 others who lose their life every day due to gun violence.
As for the color Orange? That's the color that hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others. It ensures that they are seen by everyone.
Friday night, the local chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America will light up the Historic Capitol Building in orange as well.
"The wear orange campaign isn't about politics," says Melissa Franklin, the Tallahassee Chapter Lead for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. "It isn't about the gun debate. And it isn't about choosing a side. It's raising awareness of gun violence and spreading prevention measures throughout the country."
Saturday afternoon, the this organization will host a family festival at GrassLands Brewing Company before marching to the capitol to help raise awareness about gun violence.
The Schedule for Saturday, 6/2/2017:
12:00 pm: Family festival at GrassLands Brewing Company on Gaines Street.
1:45 pm: March to the Capitol
2:00 pm: Rally at the Capitol
