TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Plans are in the early stages for a residential community for adults with developmental disabilities in the Capital City.

The local organization Independence Danding proposed the idea in August.

Advocates hope to lease 20 acres of city-owned park land in Southwood for a housing development and community center for 50 to 70 people with developmental issues. Similar communities have been built throughout Florida, but none exist in Tallahassee.

A small group of dedicated volunteers are behind the movement to educate the city commission and get the residents of Southwood on board.

"There's definitely a need for young adults with cognitive disabilities to find a residential structure that is suitable for them to have long-term living options within the city of Tallahassee and this will provide that option," said Tedder.

After searching around the county for a suitable site, Southwood was targeted due to access to public transportation, walking trails, and nearby jobs. Tedder adds, in the Dec. 6 meeting, the commission will discuss plans moving forward.
