TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Tax Day is less than a month away and if you haven't filed your taxes yet, there's still time.
And if you make less than $66,000 a year, you can file for free. That's with the help of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program or VITA.
Rebecca Weaver with United Way of the Big Bend says taxes can be intimidating, especially with recent changes in tax law and fees involved in filing.
Through VITA, IRS certified volunteers will prepare your taxes for free.
"It's important that it's out there into the community because there's a lot of individuals out there who may have an economic disadvantage or an economic hardship and can't afford to actually pay the fees that are associated with getting your taxes done," said Weaver. "So this really allows for economic stability for members of our community."
Weaver says the money people save on tax preparation fees can put toward bills and savings. The volunteers also make sure you're getting all of the tax credits that you qualify for.
And since it's a government funded program, you know there won't be any scams, and you won't have to pay for services you don't actually need.
