TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Hartsfield Elementary School celebrated its 'Bigs in Blue' program on Tuesday.
It's a one-to-one mentoring program through Big Brothers, Big Sisters of the Big Bend that matches kids with mentors from the Tallahassee Police Department. The program is launching at Hartsfield Elementary School.
The goal is to help children develop into confident adults and help build bonds between law enforcement and families they serve.
"It's a good feeling, the kids look forward to it. They look for their mentor during the week, they look for their mentor to come and visit with them and that means so much," said Dr. Rhonda Blackwell-Flanagan, Principal at Hartsfield Elementary. "It's about inspiration and that's what we're here for."
Kids that participate in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program tend to have greater confidence, better relationships and higher aspirations.
They also tend to have more academic success.
