Foul play not suspected in person jumping from 5th floor of Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — The Tallahassee Police Department said foul play is not suspected in a person that jumped from the 5th floor to the 2nd story roof of Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare.

TPD’s Violent Crimes Unit Investigators discovered that the patient retrieved a drawer from a nearby dresser to break the hospital room window.

While trying to jump out of the window, hospital staff immediately tried to intervene and stop the patient from jumping.

The patient defeated their efforts and would eventually fall, suffering life threatening injuries. TMH medical staff provided immediate care to the patient, who is now in stable condition.


Police are currently on scene investigating after they say a person jumped from the 5th floor to the 2nd story roof of Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare.

TMH says that staff were inside the room when the patient jumped from the window. The hospital said it doesn't know how the patient opened the window, as their windows are equipped with a special lock.

The patient's family has been notified of the incident, according to the hospital. Officials were unable to confirm if the patient had any mental illness or not.

According to the Tallahassee Police Department, the incident occurred Friday morning around 7:50 a.m.

Arriving officers and emergency medical personnel discovered the individual on the rooftop suffering from life threatening injuries. The person was quickly removed from the roof and taken into the hospital’s emergency room for immediate evaluation and treatment.

They say the person is currently in critical condition.

TMH released the following statement to ABC 27:

This morning, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare had an unfortunate incident occur with a patient in the main hospital.

This situation is currently under investigation and we are working closely with law enforcement. Please know this an isolated event and is under control.

There is no safety risk for colleagues, patients or visitors. More information will be provided when it becomes available.

We have reporters at the scene and we will bring you more information as it becomes available.

Investigators with TPD’s Violent Crimes Unit and Forensics Unit are on scene.
