TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A community for adults with disabilities is getting closer to reality in Tallahassee.

We first told you about Independence Landing last year.

Parents learned the latest about the project at a special meeting on Tuesday.

The goal is to start building this community, but right now, it's all about the people who will live there.

These are adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities who are ready to basically live on their own.

This will be a residential community with a range of activities and resources. It will take up 20 acres in Southwood across from Florida High.

Future residents have to have an assessment to determine how ready they are to live on their own.

The Independence Landing board is making sure parents understand that process and how to plan for it.

"This is a need that is growing, and it is not going away. Right now, when the last parent dies, there's no place for these people to go except to a group home or nursing home," said Allison Tant, Independence Landing Board Member. "While both of those options are necessary options on the continuum of care, they shouldn't be the first option. So, it's the very lucky few that have a family member that can take them in."

So far, Independence Landing has raised more than $350,000, but the project still has a way to go before construction can start.
