TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — A new bill could soon make it easier for struggling families to find housing during the pandemic.

The new bill proposed by Florida Sen. Shevrin Jones hopes to protect people who have been evicted as a result of COVID-19.

If passed, landlords would not be able to refuse to enter rental agreements with people for having evictions on their record.

Jones said it's a step toward helping people get back on their feet.

"We know that the pandemic has hit households in a very real way. We're trying to use this time for renters so that after they get back on their feet, they can look for a place for them and their families," said Jones. "One thing we're trying to do in our office is look at all types of possibilities to bring COVID relief, whether it's bringing COVID relief or dealing with small businesses."

Jones said he wants to speak to landlords to hear their thoughts on how to help them, as well.

The 2021 Florida legislative session starts on March 2.
