LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) — Increasing school safety is a huge topic this year following the Marjory Stoneman Doulgas shooting.

On Tuesday, Superintendent Rocky Hanna of Leon County Schools gave the school board an overview of changes that have been made to increase safety.

He says the district has law enforcement officers in every school, they've added dozens of security cameras, and are monitoring campus entrances.

Students are also practicing active shooter drills.

"Where kids would go to a hard corner, out of line of site from any potential intruder, they would hide, stay quiet. Those drills have has a traumatic effect on some young people, so here has to be a balance," said Hanna. "These kids, 7, 8, 9 year-olds, they're very fragile. They don't really understand why we're doing this."

Superintendent Hanna says they're making sure to keep students calm while preparing them for any situation and every school has mental health counselors, so children have someone to talk to in a safe environment.
