Health officials in the area identified elevated indicators of fecal bacteria in the river, according to health officials.
"Until further information is known regarding possible bacterial contamination of the river, residents and visitors in the area are urged to take precautions when in contact with the Withlacoochee River," health officials said in the release.
The DOH has advised that anyone who comes into contact with the river water wash thoroughly, especially before eating or drinking, as well as taking other precautions with the river water until the advisory has been lifted.
