TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — More dollars are going to Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the country, including right here in Tallahassee.

Florida A & M University tells ABC 27 that the amount of donations this year is up around $3 million.

They credit the increase to alumni upping their giving during the pandemic and more light shined on HBCU's this election season.

Dr. Shawnta Friday-Shroud, Executive Director of the FAMU Foundation and Dean of the School of Business and Industry says in the last nine to twelve months they've seen donations increase significantly.

"We're a little over 3.2 million ahead of where we were the same time last year. While some of that is definitely alumni giving, I would say the lion's share of it has been more around cooperate giving," said Friday-Shroud.

Shroud says with many HBC U's in the spotlight people are finding ways to give that otherwise may not have known about these institutions.
