City of Tifton calls off city-wide mask mandate, cites ‘procedural error’

In a press release Thursday, the City of Tifton said that the city-wide mask mandate passed on Dec. 14 did not meet city charter requirements, effectively canceling the mask mandate passed on Monday.

On Dec. 14, the Tifton City Council passed a city-wide mask mandate 3-2, but Thursday city officials claimed there was a “procedural” error in the way it was passed.

According to the City of Tifton Charter, “an ordinance shall not be adopted the same day it is introduced, except for emergency ordinances."

This means that the ordinance requiring masks will be brought back before Mayor and Council for final consideration at the Council Meeting on Dec. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.

The city said in the release that they regret the delay and confusion with regards to the masking information in the city, while also urging residents to take the pandemic seriously.

Additionally, the city is seeking public comment on the matter before the next meeting, and residents can email myvoice@tifton.net if interested.
