TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Where will the Tallahassee Police Department move its headquarters?
Wednesday night, city commissioners will look at a plan-to-pick that location.
The goal is within two miles of the city center. That would be the intersection of Monroe and Tennessee streets.
That still includes some of the Southside, but at this point, the city hasn't decided on any sites.
Location is just one factor the city is thinking about. The most important aspect is size. The city says it needs at least nine acres.
Other issues are development, access, and the cost to get the land.
Here's how the selection process would go (if it's approved Wednesday night).
Five to 10 properties would make the shortlist.
The city would notify residents and businesses within 1,500 feet of each property a month before the commission looks at the options. The commission would then pick the final three.
Then, there would be community meetings near each one with at least two weeks notice. Finally, the commission would rank the proposals and ask staff to work with the top pick.
Once the city selects and gets the site, it will work on design and construction. That will include community input and a lot more.
