TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Sunday was National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
Agencies all over the country, and here in our local area, were collecting unwanted and expired drugs, deposing of them so they don't wind up in the wrong hands.
According to a 2015 Survey by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, more than 6 million Americans abused controlled drugs.
The 2015 study also showed majority of the abused prescription drugs came from family and friends of the victims.
The DEA's Take Back Day is a initiative to collect these drugs, preventing drug addiction and overdose death.
"I have young kids in the house, I wanted the pills out of the house I did not feel comfortable with that amount of pills in the house and I'm happy to get all that stuff off the streets," said Jennifer Delgado, Tallahassee resident.
Along with Gadsden County and Wakulla County Sheriff's Office, the Tallahassee Police Department collected bags from the community filled with dozens of prescription drugs.
"I used to take it to the VA or take it to the hospital but they're no longer accepting this," said Shad Morris, Tallahassee resident. "This is the safe way and this gives me a way to save the environment."
The DEA working together with the community to end drug addiction and overdose use.
TPD says they collected 150 pounds of prescription drugs Saturday.
Even after Saturday, you can safely drop off old prescription drugs year-round at TPD's station on Seventh Avenue.
