TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- Leon County commissioners are considering an interesting way to use settlement money from BP for damages from its 2010 oil spill.
The goal is to use some of it for concerts at the Capital City Amphitheater at Cascades Park.
The county is hoping to bring in major artists and boost multi-day events there to increase tourism.
During last year's retreat, commissioners agreed to use the BP settlement to create "an economy opportunity for the hospitality industry."
That's nearly $750,000, though most of it was set for structure and design concerns with the amphitheater.
Over the next two years, officials hope to use $160,000 to enhance four community festivals, including the Florida jazz and blues festival and the word of south festival.
"This initiative that the board approved last year can really help either some of our events that are just getting started like the Jazz and Blues and those events that even have a couple years into it, but can really help elevate their event by bringing in well-known artists," said Kerri Post, Leon County director of tourism development.
The proposal is to use the BP money to enhance concerts already approved for signature event funding from the county. Specific artists haven't been confirmed for most of these events.
