Tallahassee, Fla (WTXL) - This is the last week of the 2014 Florida Legislative Session and lawmakers are still trying to push some final bills. The sixty-day session ends this Saturday, May 3rd. Legislatures have until Friday to pass a roughly 75 million dollar budget.
Florida Democrats are calling on Congress to pass a comprehensive immigration bill. The bill would allow a pathway to citizenship for immigrants who are already in the country illegally. Lawmakers are also considering whether to grant a tuition break to college students living the state illegally.
Legislatures are also taking a look at a bill that would allow speed limit increases on Interstate 75, I-95, I-10, I-4, the Florida turnpike and the Suncoast Parkway. The bill passed in the Senate last week despite concerns by some that it would make roads more dangerous.
Some other items on tap this week include a bill that would make changes to the state employee pension bill. The changes would place new hires into a default plan similar to a 401-k investment if they do not choose a specific plan within nine months of employment. Another bill in focus is the expansion of the state's private school voucher program. Lawmakers are also pushing proposals for medical marijuana use in Florida as well.
