MAYO, Fla. (WTXL) - The Lafayette County Sheriff's Office is warning people calling them about an IRS phone scam to not give out any information.
"We are unfortunately unable to trace or stop these calls," the sheriff's office said in a Facebook post. "Your best defense is to be informed and not provide any information."
The office suggests that people block the call number if possible and inform their friends or family about the scam, especially if they are not on social media to learn about it.
Criminals are posing as the IRS to trick victims out of their money or personal information, the post says.
The sheriff says the IRS will not call and demand immediate payment, and will not call if you owe taxes without first sending you a bill in the mail.
