TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - One thing we all have in common is we all share the same planet, Earth

January's Difference Maker is making our community more green.

"We grow organic food and learn where our food comes from," said Cara Fleischer, January's Difference Maker.

St. Paul Church's Mosaic Garden is where volunteers meet to plant hearty vegetables through the "Creation Care" program.

It's one of 9-year-old Julia Cox's favorite things to do.

"I love to get dirty and see things grow," said volunteer Julia Cox.

"It's really neat to see the kids say 'oh that's where the pepper grows from,'" said Cara Fleischer.

Three years ago, Cara Fleischer started "Creation Care."

Its mission is to reduce our carbon footprint.

"Six times a year we do a Lake Ella Clean Up. We started the zero straw initiative," said Fleischer.

And just like a garden, they've evolved.

"Once we started giving our produce to Manna on Meridian. It was beautiful, organic produce and it was put in plastic bags and we didn't like that," said Fleischer.

So, she came up with a clever idea.

"We get together every week and sew and we create these really simple t-shirt bags on a Committee with Sustainable Tallahassee."

From t-shirt bags to our Nation's Capitol, Cara Fleischer is an environmental advocate, using her voice to speak to members of Congress about Climate Change.

She won the Leon County Soil and Water Commission race on a waste-free campaign. That's right no signs, buttons or flyers. And she's planning to make some big changes.

"I'm working with the city government on 100% renewable by 2035," said Fleischer.

But while this mom wants to inspire politicians to be environmentally conscious, she's also inspiring our future generation.

"I've learned it's not good to litter and whenever I see plastic on the street, I pick it up with my clothes," said Cox.

"I'm doing it for my kids and I hope that in the future they can look back and be glad I dedicated my life to bring more nature to their life and encourage others to do the same," said Fleischer.

Cara Fleischer is finding ways to improve our environment and that's why she's this month's Difference Maker.

She'll be sworn in this month on the Leon County Soil and Water Commission.

She says "Creation Care" is always looking for volunteers or donated t-shirts.

T-shirts can also be donated at the Saint Paul's UMC office at 1700 N. Meridian Rd.

Her email address is Cares4Creation@gmail.com.
