TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - Leon County Supervisor of Elections Ion Sancho has endorsed a candidate in the upcoming election over the position he served in for the last 28 years.

On Wednesday, Ion Sancho publicly announced he is endorsing Mark Earley for the job of Supervisor of Elections.

Sancho says he has worked with Earley the entire time he has been in office and that Early has conducted over 60 elections in the county.

"I want to ensure that the citizens have the same level of expertise, the same accurate and fair elections that we have provided," said Sancho on Wednesday.

So far, two others have announced their candidacy, Alan Williams and Tena Pate.

Pate released a statement after Sancho's announcement saying, "Mr. Williams, Mr. Earley, and I should be able to fairly compete for this position based on our own merits without Mr. Sancho's involvement. If we say that someone only with elections experiences is qualified, Mr. Sancho would have never been elected to the office that he has enjoyed for 28 years."

Williams said, "We need to make sure that every vote has a voice, because it does. And when I'm Supervisor of Elections, we will make sure that happens. We will never endorse in any race because that's not fair to the voters, that's not fair to the candidates, and that's not fair to the taxpayers of Leon County."
