TALLAHASSEE, FLA. (WTXL) - The Girls for Change group, created by the Oasis Center for Women and Girls, is asking the board to consider creating gay straight alliances in all Leon County schools.

The student organization, Girls for Change, say they want to create a "safe space" for teens in schools. The organization gave a presentation at the Leon county school board meeting Tuesday afternoon.

Currently three schools have an alliance, and group organizers say students who don't have this resource are more prone to low self-esteem.

The group delivered a petition supporting the alliances in schools with almost 500 signatures. School board members commended the group for having the courage to publicly take a stand.

The school board says they will take the petition up at a future meeting.

Girls for Change was created in the fall of 2014.
