TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Several Democratic lawmakers gathered at the State Capitol and called for additional support for Puerto Ricans who have moved to Florida following Hurricane Maria.
Hundreds of thousands of people left the island following the september storm, and many settled in the Sunshine State.
The group called on the state Legislature to spend more than $300 million in an Affordable Housing Trust Fund on housing for new residents.
In recent years, significant portions of the fund have been diverted to other areas of the budget.
In addition, recent federal funding approved by congress is aimed at helping school districts deal with the influx of tens of thousands of new students.
