NASHVILLE, AR (KSLA) - A Southwest Arkansas daycare center is being investigated by the state and police.
Meantime, the Arkansas Department of Human Services reports that it has taken interim corrective action at Alphabet Academy in Nashville, AR.
No caregivers in the facility are to be left alone with children at any time, said Marci Manley, of the Arkansas Department of Human Services. In other words, there always must be at least two staffers together with the children.
The inquiry and action arise from a complaint lodged by the mother of a 9-month-old who claims her child was injured while in the facility's care.
"It just looks as if my baby was attacked by an animal," LaToya Griffen said.
She said she dropped her son off at the daycare Friday before going to work.
Griffen said she received a call to come back to the daycare center later that day because of a situation involving
"And this is what I came to, my 9-month-old child looking like this," Decorian's mother said as she held her son.
"The worker said another 2-year-old child had climbed in the playpen while he was asleep and had attacked him."
She said her son had been bitten more than 30 times and had numerous scratches on his body.
He was treated at a hospital then released.
The daycare staffer "... said my baby didn't cry and he didn't make any noises while all of this was going on," Griffen recalled.
"But I just find that impossible."
Nashville police are investigating whether that is what happened to Decorian.
"Right now, we are trying to determine if that is the correct story - if it was a child that bit the kid or if there was any kind of neglect or failure to watch from the daycare center," criminal investigator Larry Marion said.
A KSLA News 12 crew visited Alphabet Academy on Monday but was asked to leave the property and was told that no one would be commenting at this time.
"Somebody got to speak for the child, so that is all I want is answers for my baby and his pain he has went through," Griffen said. "That is all I want is just answers."
