ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia's unemployment rate has dropped to 5.9 percent, its lowest level since the spring of 2008.

The Georgia Department of Labor on Thursday morning announced the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for August. It's down from 6 percent in July.

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said in a statement that it marks the first time Georgia's unemployment rate has dropped below 6 percent since May 2008.

He said the rate dropped as Georgia employers laid off the fewest workers for any month in more than 15 years and continued to create jobs.
