GEORGIA (WTXL) - A high-stakes special election for a Georgia house seat is over.
Republican Karen Handel won the seat for the sixth congressional district Tuesday, edging out democrat Jon Ossoff by 3.8 percentage points.
It was the most expensive house race in history, with more than $50 million spent and it denied democrats their first major victory of the Donald Trump era.
Handel says after such a contentious race, it's important for her to reach out to Ossoff's supporters and unify the sixth district.
"The way that I can do that is through my actions and my deeds and being open and transparent, accountable and available," said Handel. "And that's what I intend to do, and I'm gonna earn their... maybe they won't agree with me on everything, but if I can earn their respect, that I at least listen, that would be huge."
Handel's win is notable for another reason: she's Georgia's first republican woman to be elected to Congress.
