MOULTRIE, Ga. (WTXL) - There's been a celebration of life for a south Georgia woman who left her mark on law enforcement.

Betty Jean Gordon Gaines, 87, was laid to rest Sunday in Moultrie.

Her family says she was the first female sheriff's deputy in Georgia.

She served with the Colquitt County Sheriff's Office from 1953 to 1960.

Gaines died Monday at the Colquitt Regional Medical Center. Her cause of death is unknown.
