ATLANTA (AP) - The Georgia House has approved a bill eliminating state sales taxes on Super Bowl tickets if the National Football League selects Atlanta as a host city.
House members voted 127-22 in favor of the measure, which is backed by Gov. Nathan Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. The bill gives the same exemption to other sporting events expected to generate at least $50 million in other revenue, including all-star games for professional baseball, soccer and basketball and national college tournament finals or championships.
Supporters say the NFL requires the exemption from any city bidding to host the event and argue the metro area will benefit from such a large event.
Opponents questioned giving a break to people purchasing pricy tickets.
The bill now goes to the Senate.
