TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Florida State University is extending its closure through Friday for all campuses.
The update came at 1:45 p.m.
They say that based on the most recent forecast from the National Hurricane Center, they are extending its current closure through Friday, Sept. 15 for all campuses, due to concerns about the impact of the storm and possible long-term power outages in the Tallahassee area as a result of fallen trees.
Students are encouraged to discuss possible travel with family and friends.
The university says students who chose to not evacuate will be advised to follow a "protect in place" protocol.
"We will be prepared to support students after the storm. All university departments are engaged and prepared to respond to student needs. On-campus residence halls will remain open for current residential students," wrote the university in a statement.
The university says it will open a facility for students who live off campus and feel unsafe due to Hurricane Irma:
All guests should be prepared to bring their own bedding. It will remain open until FSU issues an all clear.
You must register in advance here by tonight at 11 p.m. Once registered, you will receive instructions by 3 p.m. Sunday. A current FSU ID card will be required for entry.
Service animals will be allowed at the facility. An Emotional Support Animal with accompanying medical certification will be permitted if on record with the FSU Student Disability Resource Center.
FSU says employees should communicate with their supervisors about their participation in post-storm assignments and clean-up efforts.
There's still no word if the Seminoles football game against the University of Miami on Saturday will be cancelled.
