MIAMI, FL. (AP) - A former South Florida police officer has been sentenced to 9 years in prison for working with a drug trafficker.
The U.S. Attorney's Office reports that 34-year-old Andres Quintanilla was sentenced on Thursday. He pleaded guilty in July to one count of attempting to affect commerce by extortion under color of law. The former Miami Springs police sergeant was arrested by the FBI in May.
Officials say an FBI informant told Quintanilla last September that he was a drug trafficker. Instead of arresting him, Quintanilla offered to help him. Prosecutors say he gave the informant the location of an undercover police drug office and the names of three Miami-Dade County police officers. He then agreed to escort 10 kilograms of cocaine.
