GADSDEN COUNTY, FL (WTXL) -- Former Shanks Middle School teacher DeWayne Johnson, of Tallahassee, faces a felony charge related to an April incident in which reports say he instructed six of his students to jump another student.

Deputy Superintendent for Gadsden County Schools Rosalyn Smith said the principal did an investigation April 9 when he got information about the incident. Johnson initially denied the allegations, Smith said, but then took full responsibility for the students' actions and tendered his resignation that same day.

He was a first-year middle school teacher, and "he has not been in our employment system since April 9, 2015," Smith said.

Gadsden County Sheriff's Office Investigator Ulysses Jenkins said Johnson was arrested Sept. 14 on a felony charge of cruelty toward a child, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and disturbing the peace.
