PALMETTO, Fla. -- The City of Palmetto has passed an ordinance that would potentially restrict the sale of medical marijuana.

The vote was made Monday at a city commission meeting. The decision comes months before voters will determine whether or not to legalize medical marijuana in the state of Florida.

Under the new ordinance, "pot shops" would not be allowed to open in the downtown area.

The vote passed 3-2, with opposing commissioners saying to vote on an issue that isn't legal yet is a waste of time.
