LYNN HAVEN, Fla. — One driver in Lynn Haven overestimated his "DIY" skills when he tried to pass an illegal homemade tag for the real thing.

A Lynn Haven police officer recently pulled over a driver after noticing he had a handwritten tag on the back of his vehicle.

The tag was written in black ink on a white piece of paper that said “Tag Applied For. 1/1/20 Sunshine State Fla. Washington County.”

After running into this homemade tag, police took to their Facebook page to make sure no else tried to steal this idea.

“Please don’t do this. This is not legal in the State of Florida,” Lynn Haven officers wrote . “You cannot draw your own tag and attach it on your vehicle and then drive around with it.”

Police want to remind drivers that any vehicle driven on the roadways of Florida must be registered.

Authorities say if you come to Florida and buy a new or used car, but you are not a resident, then you will have to get temporary registration tags.

You can do this by visiting the county tax collector's office and showing proof of insurance.
