TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The Florida House is going to vote on whether to bring the use of red-light cameras in the state to a screeching halt.
The House Appropriations Committee narrowly voted Tuesday to approve a bill that would ban the use of cameras starting in July 2019. It heads next to the full House.
Rep. Frank Artiles, the bill sponsor, argued red light cameras are a "money grab" for cities and counties. Legislators back in 2010 first authorized local governments to use the cameras to issue tickets to drivers who run red lights
Opponents of the bill (HB 4027) contended that the red light cameras help traffic safety. One of the people who testified against the bill was Melissa Wandall. Wandall's husband was killed by a red-light runner, and the initial law was named after him.
