TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Florida Department of Corrections held its annual wreath-laying ceremony to honor fallen officers Wednesday.

This year's event, held at Wakulla Correctional Institution, honored two members from the department who died in the last year.

Sergeant Jorge Ramos, who worked at the South Florida Reception Center in Miami-Dade County, died in May 2016 during a department training event.

System project analyst Karan Smith died of a heart attack while on the job at the reception and medical center in union county last July.

Department Secretary Julie Jones says the job of a correctional officer is often thankless, and Floridians need to remember the work done by all employees in the agency who work to keep the public safe.

The names of ramos and smith were added to 47 others from the department of corrections who have died in the line of duty over the years.

And all last week WTXL followed the Police Unity Tour as they made their trek to Washington, D.C.
