PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police say they have charged a Florida prison inmate in the murder of a teenage girl more than a decade and a half ago in Philadelphia.
Officials said DNA evidence led them to charge 46-year-old Rafael Crespo in the murder of 17-year-old Anjeanette Maldonado, whose body was found in a trash-strewn room in an abandoned house in October 1996.
Police said the high school student was apparently attacked as she headed to school, then sexually assaulted and killed.
Crespo, an inmate in Bowling Green, Fla., is back in Philadelphia to face charges including murder, rape, and sexual assault. He remains in custody pending an April 17 hearing; it's unclear whether he has an attorney, and the Defender Association of Philadelphia, which has represented him the past, was unavailable for comment.
