TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - A Tallahassee Firefighter may soon be in need of a bone marrow transplant and community members are getting a chance to see if they might be a match.

On Thursday, Tallahassee Fire Department Station #1 on North Adams Street will be giving cheek swabs, looking for potential matches.

According to the Tallahassee Police Department's Facebook page, those that participate will be put on the National Bone Marrow Registry. This will allow participants to see if they are a match for anyone in need of a transplant.

The TPD post does clarify that no one who participates is obligated to donate, matches will have the entire process explained to them and they can decide if they would like to donate then.

According to the Tallahassee Fire Department, this initiative was organized to help bring up registry numbers in honor of a firefighter currently battling leukemia.

For those interested in participating, cheek swabs will be given out until 4 p.m. If you are unable to make it to the firehouse and want to look into being a match, you can go to BeTheMatch.org
