EASTPOINT, Fla. (WTXL) - Officials have identified the father who died as his son was rescued from the Apalachicola Bay when the weather turned bad while they were fishing Tuesday.

The Franklin County sheriff said Linwood Thomas Brasswell Sr., 72, and Linwood Thomas Brasswell Jr., 45, both from Havana, were trying to put on lifejackets as their boat was sinking.

FCSO says they responded to a boat in distress Tuesday afternoon on the Eastpoint side of the John Gorrie Memorial Causeway.

They say two men were struggling to swim toward land as FCSO, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Franklin Detention Officers and nearby civilians tried to rescue them.

"Despite the tremendous outpouring of help," deputies wrote on Facebook, "one man was pronounced deceased after extensive CPR."

FCSO said the son was reported as stable after a night of recovery.
