TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Tallahassee Police Department is hosting a safety and sobriety checkpoint on Thursday.
The checkpoint will be held in the 3200 block of Apalachee Parkway from 11:00 p.m. until 2:30 a.m.
Police say the checkpoint will honor the memory of Samuel Brooks Rogers who was killed by a drunk driver on West Tharpe Street in Tallahassee on October 30, 2011.
They say Brooks was a lifelong Tallahassee resident and senior at Florida State at the time of his death.
DUI checkpoints are used to detect drivers who are too impaired to operate a motor vehicle, vehicles with faulty equipment, and drivers operating a vehicle without a valid license.
The checkpoint will be well marked by signage, marked patrol vehicles, and uniformed officers. Police say the operation is designed to have a minimal impact on traffic flow and to save lives.
Law enforcement has a legal obligation to publish this information prior to the check point taking place.
